64th Annual Regular Session of IAEA General Conference
As a delegate of the Russian Federation, Deputy Chairman of Rostechnadzor Alexey Ferapontov is taking part in the 64th Annual Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference, which opened on September 21 in Vienna, Austria.
As part of the event, the Russian delegation has met with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi to discuss the main elements of cooperation between Russia and the IAEA, including the initiatives to develop the nuclear energy infrastructure in the countries that have begun or are planning to build nuclear power plants of Russian designs, as well as the plans to hold an international conference of technical support organizations for the regulatory bodies in Russia in 2022 under the auspices of the IAEA. In addition, the issues of Mr. Grossi’s forthcoming visit to Russia, the application of safeguards in Iran, and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action were touched upon.
Mr. Ferapontov has also taken part in the meeting with William D. Magwood, IV, Director-General of the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD NEA) where the parties discussed a number of topical issues of cooperation between Russia and the OECD NEA.
This year, the composition of the national delegations and the scope of events within and on the sidelines of the General Conference were significantly reduced due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the epidemiological situation in the Republic of Austria. Some of the events are held in the format of video conferencing. On September 24, the representatives of Rostechnadzor are to participate in a virtual meeting of the top officials of the regulatory authorities traditionally held on the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference, on September 25 – in the next plenary session of the Regulatory Cooperation Forum (RCF) to discuss issues of the implementation of the new RCF strategic plan.
The IAEA General Conference will complete its work on September 25.
