On 17 May 2016, Deputy Chairman Alexey Ferapontov had a meeting with a delegation of nuclear energy scientists and experts of the Republic of Korea at Rostechnadzor. The Korean delegation included, among others, Dr Chang Soon Heung, President of the Korea Institute for Nuclear Safety (KINS), Dr Kim Hark Rho, Senior Vice President of the Korea Atomic Energy research Institute (KAERI), and Dr Park Won Seok, Director of the Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor Development Agency. Representatives of the Rostechnadzor HQ departments and SEC NRS also took part in the meeting.
The Republic of Korea is implementing a programme of building its own fast reactor that was initiated in 2012. It comprises development and construction of an experimental commercial unit with a 150 MW(e) Prototype Gen-IV Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (PGSFR) by 2018.
With this in mind, regulatory safety aspects of the Russian fast reactors were the major issues of discussion. The Russian experts presented information and answered questions regarding, in particular, the national approach and licensing process for such reactors.
