Rostechnadzor Takes Part in 39th Meeting of IAEA Commission on Safety Standards


The 39th meeting of the IAEA Commission on Safety Standards (CSS) was held on April 6 to 8, 2016, in Vienna, Austria. The Rostechnadzor delegation was headed by Deputy Chairman Alexey Ferapontov, a permanent CSS member for the Russian Federation.

The meeting was the first one for the CSS of its new, sixth convocation. Therefore, the newly appointed CSS members were informed about the strategy and procedure of development of IAEA Safety Standards and the activities of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Safety and Security.

The meeting also heard reports of the chairs of the Committees on Safety Standards (Waste Safety Standards Committee (WASSC), Radiation Safety Standards Committee (RASSC), Transport Safety Standards Committee (TRANSSC), and Nuclear Safety Standards Committee (NUSSC)) about the activities of the said committees in the accounting period.

Also, the CSS chairperson reported on the activities of the CSS of the fifth convocation and discussed with the meeting attendees prospects for the next period of its mandate.

In line with the agenda, the participants approved draft publications and document preparation profiles presented by the relevant committees.

The meeting’s ending was dedicated to a new IAEA information resource created for harmonization of the work on development of the IAEA nuclear safety and nuclear security standards.

The IAEA CSS is a standing body of senior officials from the national regulatory agencies whose competence covers development and introduction of documents on nuclear and radiological safety, safe transportation and waste treatment. The CSS meetings are held biannually.
